There are few people that can connect with their subject like @ben_moon . I’ve looked up to him as a photographer & storyteller for many many years. His ability to be vulnerable is what makes his work so powerful. His personal story of surviving cancer told through his short film ‘Denali’ is a tear jerker & one of the most inspiring films I have ever seen. Google it. . During a workshop we taught together in LA last year he pulled me aside & asked to shoot my portrait. We ended up behind a dumpster using a food tray from the trash as a reflective bounce to light the eyes. I laughed as I tried to envision what Ben shot in these less than ideal conditions. But as always... he made something pretty special. To see more of his ‘Moon Faces’ series check his account at @ben_moon Shot with 85mm F1.4 Sony A7RII
To support the victims of the Montecito mudslides and Thomas Fire along the California Coast I pulled together some of my favorite CA images in a disaster relief gallery on my website. 100% of proceeds goes to support those who lost everything. Check it out at www.ChrisBurkard.com or in my bio link.
The past two weeks of traveling (Cali & phx) have been a great opportunity to work on what I love. On top of the places I photographed, mountains I hiked, and the beaches I ran. I was able to meet so many amazing people. Including one of my biggest idols, @chrisburkard and some of his team, @snackfarmer and @michaelryanclark . Being able to listen to their stories and adventures was inspiring. I was also lucky enough to pick up some incredible advice that I will carry with me for years to come and will help me achieve my dreams. I am incredibly lucky to be able to love what I do every single day! • • • #ecphotography#chrisburkard#pismobeach#travel#travelphotography
Just printed our first big A7RIII file for a client & it is a beauty. Really pleased with this camera for landscape work. Killer color rendition throughout. Printing images has long been one of the toughest parts of being a photogrpaher. Meaning the post processing, paper, materials, quality etc is always hard to really dial in and often takes years. This is a 30x45 inch print. We used Kodak Endura Lustre paper that is framed in a @sawandmitre honey-maple natural wood frame. Over the years I have become really fond of non glass, none matte framing so this one will stay as is. Exposed. For those wondering we use a lab in SF called Bay Photo. They do incredible work. Thanks @russell_holliday for the model
An amazing experience meeting one of my favorite photographers at his studio. He’s become a huge inspiration of mine and always finds a way to connect with me, rather it be through his photos or quotes 🤙🏻 #underthearticsky . . “It’s human nature to feel connected to places or things that we understand on a personal level; in other words, the only way people will care about preserving places on this earth is if they feel physically, emotionally, or spiritually invested. It is only through this process of connection that our personal empowerment is fully realized. I understand that I am unable to lead every single person to feel empowered to make a difference, but I hope that I can help garner people’s connection with the world around us to realize that they are valuable in keeping it alive and healthy.” - Chris Burkard

The key is learning what to say, and when to say it, because the last thing the world needs is more opinions that people aren’t able to stand behind. Im not gonna sugar coat it.. One of the great falsehoods we have led ourselves to believe these days is that we have-to or aught-to please everyone in order to be successful. Truth be told that couldn’t be farther from the truth. There isn’t a single artist, brand, author, teacher, etc that i look up to that doesn’t have a strong opinion or way of viewing the world & their motives aren’t based on what the majority wants to hear. This is often what makes them unique. And the beauty is that you dont always have to agree to appreciate it... The same goes for photographers and or anyone with a creative vision. The never ending cycle of trying to be everything to everyone will burn you out in the end. And if you are willing to be humble enough, then you will see everyone as someone you can learn from. The sooner you find a purpose in your work the easier it is to know what you stand for - Its been said if you stand for nothing you will fall for anything. . Thank you so much to my friend for letting me display this labor of love in your gallery space in NYC. So grateful to those that came by to see the imagery and hear the stories. All images in this series were shot from a small plane overlooking threatened glacial rivers in Iceland. An ongoing series of work I have been shooting for a half decade.
