AOM • Episode 1: STOP STRETCHING YOUR QUADS LIKE THIS! _____________________________________________ You will often see people at the gym stretching their quads by standing and holding their legs with their knees bent behind them, but is this really an effective way to stretch your quads? . ❎ NO! While you may feel a stretch in your quads when you do this, as you move more into the stretch you will go into a compensation pattern by hyperextending your lower back (lumbar spine). The more you're pulling your leg back and thinking you're stretching your quads the more you're arching through your lumbar spine!!❗ Repeatedly doing this will put your lower back at higher risk for injury in the long run! 🚫 . ✔ Here's how go do a proper quad stretch: 1) Get into a side-lying position with your bottom knee in a bent 90 degree position. This will limit any movement from your lower back by stabilizing your pelvis. 2) Bend your top knee so you can grab with your hand (or with a towel) to feel a nice stretch through the quads. To enhance this stretch further, passively extend your hips. Hold for 20-30 sec. . Incorporate this stretch into your recovery/cool-down routine and let us know if you notice a difference in your leg workouts! ________________ Art of Mobility: Every movement should have a purpose.
