Congratulations, Yuzuru, from the bottom of my heart and the depths of my soul. It has taken me some time to process this historic victory. It’s is all still so surreal. As I write this, I am out in nature, surrounded by the mellow winter landscape. When I look at Yuzuru, and all that he is, I am often tempted to see the traits that I do not possess- astounding physical strength, the desire and will to do something superhuman, the ability to push myself to manifest greatness no matter what challenges lie before me- as he has. However, I believe that Yuzu would want me to see it in a different way: that there is always the possibility of growing into new dimensions of ourselves. This skating season has had moments of real darkness, but they were ultimately vanquished with the most vibrant dawn. Yuzuru kept to the shadows these past few months, and then burst back to us like the golden sunrise breaking over the horizon, radiating with infinite warmth. Yuzuru Hanyu has carried himself with such dignity and grace beyond all men, and I truly believe it is this energy that brought him to the Gold once more. (It feels like the Gold was not something he had to win, but something he just needed to arrive at, like it was waiting for him all along.) Moreover, the beauty in the bond between himself, Javi, and Shoma, is not only precious, but exceedingly rare. This will be a podium to remember for the ages, as will their intensely tender hug. As always, I must end with a prayer. Today I pray that Yuzu soaks in all the glory, and then takes a nice long rest, to fully recooperate from his injury. What happens after that remains to be seen, but it is safe to say that we will all be celebrating this historic and magnificent moment for a long time to come. And I am sure that, before long, we will see Yuzu growing into more complex and beautiful dimensions of himself than we could dream of. This isn’t the end of Yuzuru’s journey, but his new beginning as the King. . . .
