A contrast between white snow and emerald green stream is so fantastic!

Kitsune-ga-fuchi (Fox pool) is one of the pools named after animals with mystical powers who are believed to have once occupied Atera Valley. Foxes are considered shape-shifters in Japanese myths, and legend has it that they use this water as mirrors to check their disguises. Ōkuwa Village, Kiso, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. The emerald water of Atera River remains pristinely clear no matter how hard it rains thanks to the well-maintained surrounding forests and the welded tuff ground underneath. Welded tuff is made of volcanic sediment consolidated after melting under its own high temperature and weight, thus becoming very hard and extremely resistant to weathering. The stream, therefore, is free of sand or other small particles that usually muddy rivers. Ōkuwa Village, Kiso, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. What’s left of the Forest Railway that used to run through Kiso Valley to transport felled logs. Developed as a replacement of the traditional logs transportation method using the stream of Kiso River and its many tributaries, the railway was in service for more than 50 years until taken over by road transportation in 1966. Today this bridge is no longer in use, except occasionally by mountain monkeys to cross Atera River. Ōkuwa Village, Kiso, Nagano Prefecture, Japan.
