On gloomy winter days such as today, motivation and productivity are under threat from likely bursts of seasonal depression. In moments like this, I like think back to people who inspired me along the way. Only last week, Professor Kim Nasmyth was awarded the 2018 Breakthrough Prize for his groundbreaking contribution to our molecular understanding of cell division which is fundamental to our therapeutic strategies in cancer treatment. One of my favourite lecturers at Oxford, Kim has an exceptional ability to design simple experiments that result in electrifying insight in complex biological processes. His elegant style of teaching took us on a walk through the history of scientific discovery, beautifully tied up with a navigation of current advances in a field that he commands. And every time he would encourage curiosity and outline the blank pages on the horizon that represent open questions to be answered by future generations of scientists. And what struck me most is that his prominence and obviously busy schedule never stood in the way of a casual chat outside the department with juniors such as myself. Thank you Kim, and congratulations to you and all the PostDocs, the army of PhD and Part II students and technicians that ever had the pleasure of working in your lab, for this prize that is 200% deserved! #gloomy#winterdays#motivation#inspiration#hardwork#teacher#influence#biochemistry#oxford#professor#award#breakthrough#prize#scientists#celldivision#elegance#humility#imagination#discovery#contribution @oxford_uni
Last month, we were delighted to be awarded the Silver award for Best use of Social and Collaborative Learning Technologies and the Gold award for Best Learning Platform Implementation, at the 2017 Learning Technologies Awards. Congratulations to all of our employees involved in this wonderful partnership with @HT2Labs!
