The spotlight is once again on the magnificent Rashtrapati Bhavan with voting for the presidential election underway. Originally the centrepiece of the new imperial capital, New Delhi, as the Viceroy’s House, it reflects cross-cultural exchange, notions of hybridity and the contemporary struggle with modernity. For the architect, Sir Edwin Landseer Lutyens, the exercise culminated in a new vision of the imperial style that married aspects of an imported neoclassicism with elements of Indian architecture, or ‘a touch of Orientalism’.
