In 2010 I read Pavel Tsatsouline's book "Power to the People" ... and that is when I finally grasped what it takes to improve at something in the gym. (I've used it specifically for push ups, pull ups, and dips but it can be used for anything!) * * * You do NOT have to train to absolute failure or perform an exercise over and over again until you want to keel over to become proficient at something! * * *  Not only is it unnecessary - but Tsatsouline argues it's counterproductive to improving strength or skill. * * * Here is a direct quote from the book, "To paraphrase powerlifting champ Dr. Terry Todd, if you are training to failure, you are training to fail." * * * Instead, he suggests "Greasing the Groove" to build up the neurological pathways. By doing the exercise repeatedly but not to failure - our bodies can handle doing it more often throughout the week...even every day depending on what it is! And eventually max effort, strength, and/or skill will be improved. * * * So what does this mean? Perform the exercise you'd like to improve more often, but don't do high reps each time or go to the point of fatigue. * * * ๐Ÿ‘‰For example: - ๐Ÿ’ชSay you'd like to be able to do more pushups. - ๐Ÿค”You could: - A) Perform 5 reps in between each set of an exercise during your workout...throughout your entire workout or even just between sets of a few exercises. - B) Perform 5 reps 10 times throughout the day. - C) Add weight to your back and perform 2 to 3 weighted push ups between sets or throughout the day in the same manner. - ๐Ÿ‘†๐Ÿ‘†๐Ÿ‘†Although I've put my own spin on it in the video above by varying the push up exercises & difficulty - it is the general concept of Greasing the Groove throughout the workout. * * * ๐Ÿ˜ŠWhat do you think? Your hip flexors play an important role in recovering your leg after a powerful pedal stroke ๐Ÿšด‍โ™€๏ธ or a stride while you are running ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿป Protect that low back and avoid those mysterious hip flexor strains and quad pulls peopleโ€ผ๏ธ . I love โค๏ธ this wall hip flexion drill to isolate the psoas. The hands on the wall with the timing of the breathing irradiates force to improve awareness to the core as you drive the knee upwards โฌ†๏ธ
