My heart is filled with happiness to know that China is finally going to ban Ivory trade and move against elephant poaching by the end of 2017! Elephants were heading straight to extinction with only 50,000 left. We had 100,000 5 years ago! These beautiful animals future is looking brighter now!🌎❀️🐘 #jointheherd #ivoryfree #elephants #extinctioncrisis #animalrights #futurewildlifeconservationofficerπŸ’•

#repost @zenhikergirl with @repostapp ・・・ In case you hadn't heard this unfathomable news... @Regrann from @wildaid - South Africa Just Made It Legal To Sell Rhino Horn. Just a few weeks after poachers broke into a rhino orphanage in South Africa and killed two baby rhinos for their tiny horns, the country made the domestic trade of rhino horn legal. Worth more than its weight in gold, rhino horn is made of keratin, which is the same material as our fingernails. But organized crime groups profit from illegally trafficking the keratin from rhino horn across borders into Asia because of the unfounded superstition that it cures everything from hangovers to cancer. __________________________________________________ The trade of rhinoceros horn has been internationally banned since 1977 because high demand for the horns drives rampant poaching and threatens rhinos with extinction. Susie Watts of WildAid's Africa Program, told The Dodo in a statement. "There is no domestic demand for rhino horn products and, as the pro-trade lobby very well knows, the reason why the moratorium was implemented in the first place was to prevent domestic trade from being used as a cover for smuggling.” #savetherhino #jointheherd#extinctioncrisis #rhino #rhinos#conservation #wildlife #poaching#whenthebuyingstopsthekillingcantoo __________________________________________________ Read More: https://www.thedodo.com/south-africa-rhino-horn-2346417835.html?utm_content=buffer329e3&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer #repost @chancellordavid with @repostapp ・・・ A white rhino is dehorned at the world’s largest captive breeding operation in South Africa. Other than making killer accessories, we're also really passionate about wildlife. Check out our 'Giving Back' page at www.zooforpeople.com for more details Repost from @wildaid // With fewer than 4,000 tigers remaining in the wild, it is critical that we stop the demand for tiger products, which includes bones & skin. ECOLITERACY PROJECT, DAY 13: 'EXTINCTION' _ Extinction is the disappearance of a species. - This sounds simple on the surface, but in practice it can often be difficult to define exactly when a species goes extinct, and even if there are still living individuals, the species may have lost its ability to breed and recover long before. - Ecologically speaking, a species need not die off completely to be considered extinct. It is only necessary that the numbers become so low that the species no longer interacts significantly with other species in its environment. - Extinction is a fundamental evolutionary process for "weeding out" species that no longer have a role to play in their ecosystem. When your niche is no longer viable, you must adapt or perish. - According to our most widely accepted estimates, 99% of the 5 billion or so species that have ever existed are now extinct. Other more recent estimates suggest that the planet currently hosts closer to 1 trillion species, of which less than 0.001% of them are known to us. - In the absence of humans, "background extinction" proceeds at a rate of about 1-5 species per year. Our destructive activities, however, have dramatically inflated this rate to anywhere from 100 to 1000 times larger. - Our era will go down in geological history as the sixth "mass extinction event" on Earth, and what distinguishes it from past mass extinctions is that humans appear to be directly responsible. - In 2002, biologist E.O. Wilson estimated that if the status quo of ecological degradation continues, up to one-half of all plant and animal species will be extinct by 2100. - We know that biodiversity leads to resilience, while homogeneity breeds brittle systems. Humans are rapidly restructuring the species composition of the planet, artificially selecting for one key criterion: the ability to thrive in human-dominated systems. - Not a whole lot of species can do this, but those who can are generally considered pests: think raccoons,

@Regrann from @ryderkingwild - Breaking News: South Africa's top court lifts ban on domestic sales in rhino horn. This decision means that the sale of rhino horns is now legal in South Africa. A global ban in the horn trade, regulated by the U.N, remains in place, meaning horn acquired legally in South Africa cannot be exported. While, the number of rhinos poached for their horns in South Africa fell 10 percent in 2016 to 1,054, the second straight year of decline according to government data, the levels still remain alarming. South Africa has more than 80 percent of the world's rhino population with about 18,000 white rhinos and close to 2,000 black rhinos, which is why it has been at the frontline of the horn poaching crisis involving global crime syndicates. @wildaid _____________________________________________________________ Feeding illicit markets can breed additional demand and may result in more poaching. There is no realistic way to maintain chain of custody over rhino horns and prevent them from being trafficked abroad. There should be no legal horn market so long as rhino poaching, illegal trade and consumer demand are out of control. #savetherhino #jointheherd #extinctioncrisis #rhino #rhinos #conservation #wildlife #poaching #whenthebuyingstopsthekillingcantoo Photo credit: @andrewwegst - #regrann
