Last night I watched 'Sudan - The last of the rhinos' Sudan is the last remaining male Northern White Rhino (there are 2 females). Too old to reproduce, these 3 rhinos will most likely be the last of their species. Such a sad and depressing situation that has been brought about entirely by humans. How do we explain to children that there are no more of these beautiful rhinos because we killed them all? And that we killed them because their horns were believed to be some kind of 'miracle cure' medicine - even though you could eat your own fingernails and it would be the same thing? They will quite rightly think that that is the stupidest thing they've ever heard 😓
In 1989, this little guy's entire species was declared extinct. The Golden Toad inhabited the tropical forests of Costa Rica in small numbers due to the incline of urbanization. At first, many people believed Climate Change was to blame—yet, no one is entirely sure. Around the time the frog went extinct, Costa Rica was impacted by an El-Niño. It's possible the El-Niño warmed up the climate enough to cause the frogs to develop a skin disease known as chytridiomycosis. However, global warming could've had the same effect. Of course, researchers will truly never know what happened to the frog. However, a lot can be learned from this species' extinction. How many species could go extinct if the whole world continues to warm up? Which species could be the next Golden Toad? —Zach🦊 ••• (📸-Anon.) Definitely going to buy some milkweed to plant :) #repost @oceanicpreservationsociety (@get_repost) ・・・ In honor of #pollinatorweek join our friend @joelsartore in helping the beautiful monarch! 🦋 The monarch butterfly is a declining species that we can save together by pledging not to use herbicides and pesticides on our lawns, and by planting milkweed for butterflies to lay their eggs on. Order your milkweed seeds and partially grown plants called ‘stems’ from Monarchwatch.org, and then plant them and post a picture to instagram using #pollinatorhero to accept the challenge of saving the monarch. #repost @leonardodicaprio (@get_repost) ・・・ #regram #rg @wildaid: China's ivory shops and carving factories are closing their doors!! ❤️🐘🐘🐘🐘 Last year China promised to stop the sale of elephant ivory by the end of 2017. Now it is making good on that promise: 67 ivory carving factories and retail shops across the country will close down on Friday, and the rest by the of the year. This is great news for the 30,000 elephants killed each year for their tusks in Africa. #jointheherd #ivoryfree #extinctioncrisis #elephants #whenthebuyingstopsthekillingcantoo
Went to visit my favorites for World Giraffe Day, everyone forgets they are also going extinct! #worldgiraffeday #worldgiraffeday2017 #chicago #lincolnparkzoo #giraffe #giraffes #love #beauty #beautiful #extinctioncrisis #savethem
On June 20, World Day for the protection of elephants in zoos is celebrated. The goal is the liberation of all elephants of the world from captivity. #elephant @wildaid #jointheherd #ivoryfree #extinctioncrisis #elephants #whenthebuyingstopsthekillingcantoo @wildnetorg @elephantcrisisfund #worldwildlifeday @leonardodicaprio #life #live #peace #planetearth
Something I struggle with a bit is making sure I don't make my work too depressing. It is by nature that way unfortunately, as I deal with endangerment, climate change and extinction. But I don't want to alienate my audience - I want people to feel positive about the future of the planet and the wildlife on it, and therefor ourselves too. Then I discovered a gent called Diogo Verissimo, a conservation scientist who is passionate about giving these stories a positive side. He founded a project called 'Lost & Found', charting species which were thought to be extinct but were actually still going! They are stories of rediscovery and joy and I was so happy to find someone else who has found a way to bring attention to extinction but still find a positive side. I called him, we chatted and we have a collaboration on our hands at some point in the future. Watch this space! Very excited 💚 #lovewildlife : www.lostandfoundnature.com . . . #extinction #diogoverissimo #lostandfound #animals #wildlife #endangered #extinctioncrisis #redcrestedtreerat #lost #found #rediscovered #rediscovery #collaboration #art #science #collab #nature #wildlife #wild #habitat
