#repost @endextinctionintl (@get_repost) ・・・ Scientific name: Cyanopsitta spixii. Common name: Spix's Macaw; Little Blue Macaw. Found in: Brazil. IUCN Redlist status: Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct in the Wild). Lifespan: Up to 40 years. Quick facts: * One of the rarest birds in the world * The most famous individual of this species, and the inspiration for the Film "Rio", was a male named Presley. He was found in the late 1970's when the illegal pet trade was beginning to be regulated. After being kept as a pet for years across South America and North America, Presley was rescued and taken to San Diego Zoo where his genetic were tested and a small sample kept for conservation efforts. He was then returned to Brazil where he lived out the remainder of his life in care until he passed away in June 2014 at the approximate age of 40 years old. Presley was the last Spix's Macaw known to have been born in the wild. All remaining individuals are captive-born. Estimated number left in the wild: Possibly none, but at most less than 50 individuals. Endangered due to: * Severe long-term habitat destruction * Long-term illegal capture for the pet trade * Severe lack of genetic diversity. What we can do: * Support captive breeding programs and conservation research * Support habitat protection and regeneration * Do not purchase endangered species without legal permits and licences, as well as thorough research into the species' needs and conservation requirements. #repost @leonardodicapriofdn (@get_repost) ・・・ A global campaign is being launched to turn a huge tract of #oceans around the #antarctic into the world’s biggest sanctuary, five times the size of Germany, protecting #wildlife, #biodiversity and helping the fight against #climatechange. The huge 1.8m sq km reserve would ban all #fishing in a vast area of the #weddellsea and around the Antarctic Peninsula, safeguarding species including #penguins, #killerwhales, #leopardseals and #bluewhales. #repost @unesco (@get_repost) ・・・ In a few years time, this could be the only way to see polar bears: in a picture. Climate change is real and it is threatening all living beings on Earth, including yourself. We are facing a true ecological emergency for our Planet and we are running out of time. Solutions and actions cannot wait any longer. Yesterday we celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Kyoto Protocol and today the One Planet summit is taking place in Paris, marking the 2nd anniversary of the Paris Agreement. The time for concrete action is now. Are you ready to commit to the fight against climate change and for the future of the Planet? Being climate change one of the defining issues of our time, UNESCO has developed over 30 programmes in the sciences, education, culture and communication to contribute to creating knowledge, educating and communicating about climate change, and to understanding the ethical implications for present and future generations. #climatechange #changingmindsnottheclimate #oneplanetsummit #kyotoprotocol #ilovekyotoprotocol #saveourocean #oceans #environment #withnature #sustainabledevelopment #sdgs #2030agenda #parisagreement #actonclimate #makeourplanetgreatagain #oneplanet #unesco #post600 Photo credit: FloridaStock/Shutterstock
#repost @joelsartore (@get_repost) ・・・ A Saint Vincent amazon photographed at the @HoustonZoo. Saint Vincent amazons are the only parrot living on the Caribbean island of Saint Vincent. They are born with one of two color morphs, either yellow or green, and have very distinct individual plumages. Virtually no two birds of this species look the same. This species is listed as vulnerable on the #iucn Redlist due mainly to hunting for food, trapping for the cage-bird trade, and habitat loss. . . #birds #amazon #parrots #wildlife #nature #wildlifephotography #naturephotography #animalfacts #natgeo #photoark #savetogether
Was initially not very hopeful when i reached SBTB, reached pretty late and it was almost dark, However when i reached the pond location, this adorable little guy landed on a lotus right in front of me, i quickly grab some handheld shots. Pretty satisfied considering i reached the location with less than 30 mins before sunset. ~ Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays 🎄🎉 ~ #commonkingfisher #sataybythebay . . . . . #sonyartisanofimagery #sonyalpha #sonya7rii #a7rii #sonyimages  #sonyphotography #igsg #sgig #instasg #igerssingapore #instagramsg #vsco #vscocam #vscosg #instagood #instadaily #sgdaily #notapet #rareanimals #extinctioncrisis #wildlife #nature #wildlifephotography #naturephotography #animalfacts #natgeo #photoark #savetogether
Repost from @joyfulvegan we can solve so many problems our generation has inherited by simply going Vegan. I’d rather know there are still macaques and elephants and tigers and wolves and giraffes in the wild somewhere than see cows or sheep in a field here. Yes, farmed landscapes have their beauty, but rewilding is the ideal. #extinctioncrisis#extinctionevent#habitatdestruction#hunting#waterpollution#greenhouseemissions#monoculture#feedcrops#wasteful#cruel#unnecessary#livestockfarming#animalag#govegan#compassion#vegan#whyvegan
