Assessment Time πŸ• Lay on the ground face up and put your hands, palms flat, underneath your low back. Keeping your leg straight and toe pulled back towards you, raise one leg as high as you can. If your leg doesn’t go past perpendicular to the ground, shortened hamstrings are a likely contributor to your low back pain. . . The Fix πŸ›  The TRUE hamstring stretch. Most “hamstring stretches” end up stretching everything BUT the target muscle. The proper way to stretch your hamstrings is to find a surface about 2ft off the ground. Keeping your hips and torso square put one foot up on the surface. πŸ”‘Keep your low back in a slight arch! πŸ”‘ Keep the knee that is up BENT! To increase the stretch imagine pushing your butt backwards to touch the wall behind you. You should feel this stretch in the muscle belly as opposed to directly behind the knee. The purpose of Shoulder CARs is to maintain a healthy shoulder joint (muscle tissue and cartilage) by delivering blood flow/ nutrients to the joint.  This is one of the most important drills you should be doing every day.  Quick tip- take shoulder through full range of motion (might feel like its going to cramp), make sure the movement is slow and controlled (video tempo). If you feel any pain during this drill reduce the Range of motion.  Repeat sequence 3 times per shoulder. For National Gymnastics Day, I have to throw it back to big foreheads, lots of hairspray, and awkward posing/jumping photoshoots. 😜This sport was the only thing that fed my constant need for a challenge, and always pushed me to and beyond any limits I thought I had. The 12 years that I spent 25 hours/week in the gym covered in chalk has helped mold me into the woman I am today. Gymnastics not only blessed me with physical and mental strength, but it taught me the importance of self-motivation, passion, perseverance, goal-setting, and accountability....all things imperative for success. There was never anything quite like the adrenaline rush you get from competition, or the fear of trying a new skill for the first time, or the conquering feeling of nailing it. #repost @formandfunctionacademy ・・・ SHOULDER MOBILITY: - With our daily work habitsπŸ’» and recreational activities πŸ“±, the anterior shoulder and chest likely need some opening up. This is a great set of drills to prime your shoulders for OVERHEAD work and pressing πŸ™†πŸΌ as well! Grab a dowel rod for this one. - First four clips are a mix of abduction and extension of the shoulder to target both the CLAVICULAR ↖️ head of pectoralis major and the STERNAL ⬅️ head of pectoralis major. Both heads insert on the humerus, and thus act together to medially rotate and adduct the arm at the glenohumeral joint. Notice, Dr. Glidden works in some thoracic mobility after stretching ↖️⬅️ in both directions. Take the dowel rod to end range of the shoulder, then add in rotation from the thoracic spine in the same direction. Go nice and easy with these exercises, don't rush or push too forcefully. A balance between shoulder mobility and stability is VERY important, but thoracic spine MOBILITY is essential for healthy shoulders! - With the dowel rod behind the back, gently pull up ⬆️ or down ⬇️ to further stretch your internal and external rotators respectively. Angle the rod a little bit to get a more comfortable stretch. - Next exercise: Shoulder dislocations. Don't worry, this exercise does NOT result in dislocated shoulders! However, it is great for all-around shoulder mobility, and it's super easy. Hands should be about snatch-width apart (or as far as your bar will allow). Keep your ribcage tucked in ↩️ and your glutes squeezed as you perform, as to avoid excess arch in your low back. Bar goes back and forth over your head, and again, take your time! - Final exercise is not only great for shoulder mobility, but it also gets your rotator cuff muscles fired up πŸ”₯ and ready to work!
