Despite your best intentions to make lifting weights, eating greens, or whatever else a habit, often these efforts fall through and said habit never lasts the course of time. .  This might be for various different reasons including your motivation, the difficulty of the chosen habit/behaviour, or simply because you haven't chosen an appropriate time to implement the habit/carry out the behaviour. .  You see, amongst other factors, how a behaviour fits into your current routine is a big element that could either set you up for success or failure depending on how you go about things. .  This is best described with a study by Judah et al., (2013), who looked at how to make teeth flossing a habit. .  They instructed people to either (1) floss AFTER showering/cleaning teeth, which were two pre-existing habits that followed one after the other; or (2) floss BETWEEN the two. .  After 8 months they found that flossing AFTER lead to stronger habit formation than BETWEEN. .  This was most likely because the BETWEEN condition meant disrupting two pre-existing interlinked habits and as a result it wasn't just a case of making flossing a habit but also breaking and re-forming existing ones. . 👆from a practical perspective, this means that if you want to make a behaviour a habit, it's best placing it after existing habits/cues rather than interrupting a pre-existing pattern of behaviours. .  Using my attempt to make meditation a habit, I've scheduled it in AFTER the cue of my post workout meal rather than between the cue of me arriving back from the gym and then eating my pwo meal. .  So it looks like this: Arrive home -> eat -> meditate ✅ .  As opposed to this: Arrive home -> meditate -> eat ❌ .  That way I don't mess with the pattern of my existing habits and am simply slotting a new one in. .  The results is that I've consistently kept up with the mediation behaviour and it's starting to become a habit ✌️️
