“From townships to grand old wine estates, this is South Africa. Having lived in and travelled to over ten of this vast continent’s countries, all the way from Morocco to South Africa, this is definitely the most complex and different. At times we are having to catch ourselves from thinking we’re in Europe rather than the Western Cape. The landscapes, people, chic hotels, unique restaurants and phenomenal food are nothing like we’ve ever experienced on this continent before. The fact that South Africa’s colonists stayed in the country and made it “their own” makes it harder to discover the true roots of this place (see previous post for more). But through enough conversations and a little digging under the surface it is there, the Africa we have grown to know and love. This is a must visit destination for those looking to experience it just as it is, but also for those looking to dig a little deeper. South Africa you are one of a kind.” - Hannah, Curio Trips Founder & Director #ifollowmycuriosity
As absolutely incredible as South Africa is as a destination, this country has a dark past that cannot, and should not be ignored. Even though it has been almost 25yrs since the apartheid system ended in South Africa, the remains of such a deeply entrenched racial system (now doesn’t that sound disturbingly familiar) are still evident today. Townships (the segregated urban areas set aside for all who were non-white during the time of apartheid) make for a stark contrast to the cities surrounding them. Their shimmering silver tin roofs can be spotted instantly as you crest a hill, and as you draw closer it is evident that these towns are self-sufficient hubs for those who were so harshly and extremely set aside, and who now struggle to find steady work and incomes to support their lives. As these pictures show [swipe right] townships are bristling with life as we know it: homes, schools, shops, barbers and braais (barbecues). Even a few minutes spent interacting with local people reminds us to avoid the temptation to stereotype those who live here, in the way apartheid intended. Instead we choose to follow our curiosity and celebrate the lifeblood of these communities, remembering to never let the same happen again. #ifollowmycuriosity

Did you know there are penguins in Africa?! Currently there are only 20,000 in Southern Africa, but African penguins are at risk of becoming extinct in the next decade if numbers continue to decline. Due to the way these specific penguins were raised they are very accustomed to sharing the beach with humans, so you can quite literally swim with penguins on your trip to South Africa. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and the only opportunity on the planet to get this close to these adorable animals.
