8 years ago I was tired of my ‘99 Maxima. It was ridiculously comfortable with leather seats and loaded with power options I’d never had before like A/C, a sunroof and windows you could roll down with a key fob. Ultimately I missed having 4WD, a stick-shift and the ability to sleep in the back. I didn’t want a pickup again. I wanted a 1st gen 4Runner. I could seat 5 or fold down the rear seats for camping. Only having 2 doors meant I’d be the last resort for driving a carpool because grownups don’t like to crawl into the backseat. You can go topless or even remove the rollbar and haul a dirtbike to the trail. Seemed like a great choice for more road trips and getting even further into the backcountry...little did I know that this decision would introduce me to a whole other universe. Stumbling on this clean little 2-owner Toyota would start a domino effect of chance happenings that would change my life forever. Bringing this inanimate object on wheels into my life would ultimately lead to the bold idea of one BIG road trip and take me half-way around the world with the love of my life (Shannon of course, not The 4RUNNER). It’s forced me outside my comfort zone countless times, introducing me to strangers and teaching me the world is not as scary as we imagine. It has opened so many doors, created friendships and even helped to create some fun fairy tales that I enjoy telling my children during story-time. I know it sounds crazy but I’ve grown rather fond of this pile of parts. Here’s to another 8 years and several more decades. #ilovemytoyota#itscomplicated#1stgenproblems#1stgen4runner#idontexpectyoutounderstand
