This is a French seam. French seams are considered one of the more premium types of finishings and are constructed on the underside of a garment. The French seam is often used on lightweight fabrics such as silk, chiffon and georgette as the fabrics are too delicate to do an overcast stitch on the seam allowance. Thus, in French seams, the raw edges are encased instead so the edges do not fray at all. Generally, French seams are not used on bulky fabrics.
