#innomedellastoria
#onthisday (22nd of August) in 1485, Richard III of England is defeated and killed at the Battle of Bosworth by the forces of Henry Tudor (later Henry VII); representing the last significant conflict of the Wars of the Roses. After the Yorkist Richard had made himself king in 1483 (probably by killing his two young nephews), the exiled Henry, who was the most senior Lancastrian claimant to the throne, saw an opportunity to invade and seize power. He bolstered his royal claim by promising to marry Elizabeth, the daughter of the late Edward IV; a marriage that would finally unite the Houses of York and Lancaster and hopefully end decades of factional rivalry. With the backing of the French, Henry landed in Wales, where he was able to exploit his Welsh ancestry in order to muster more support for his cause. Richard's army then fought Henry in Leicestershire, wherein the king gained the dubious honour of being the last English monarch to be slain in battle. Following his victory, Henry took the circlet from Richard's head and crowned himself on the battlefield, while the body of the deceased king was supposedly slung naked over a horse and then buried unceremoniously. Richard III would be the final Plantagenet king of England, as the reign of Henry VII ushered in the Tudor period, an era which lasted until the death of Elizabeth I in 1603. These two portraits of Richard III (left) and Henry VII (right) are from the 16th century. #medieval #middleages #history #england #english #historic #historical #king #thisdayinhistory #royal #monarchy #battle #war #leicestershire #britain #bosworth #york #lancaster #portrait
Happy birthday to Asher Brown Durand, born on this day in 1796. "Kindred Spirits" (1849) is a memorial to the artist Thomas Cole, who died in 1848. Cole stands with a sketchbook and flute or recorder on an outcropping in the Catskill Mountains. He converses with William Cullen Bryant, a poet whose work often describes the same picturesque scenery featured in paintings by Cole, Durand, and other Hudson River School artists. Durand's detailed, almost scientific rendering of moss-covered trees and striated granite belies his poetic conception of the work as an elegy. The friendship between Cole, Bryant, Durand, and the merchant Jonathan Sturges, who commissioned the painting, suggests the shared interest in nature among artists, writers, and businessmen in antebellum New York-the "kindred spirits" of the title. #asherbrowndurand #kindredspirits #crystalbridges #onthisday
English #illustrator and #author Aubrey Vincent Beardsley was born #onthisday in Brighton in 1872. . His drawings in black #ink were influenced by the style of Japanese woodcuts and emphasized the grotesque, the decadent, and the erotic. He was a leading figure in the Aesthetic Movement and his contribution to the development of Art Nouveau was significant despite his premature death from tuberculosis in 1898. . The Aubrey Beardsley catalogue raisonné by Linda Gertner Zatlin was published in 2016 by Yale University Press (@yalebooks) for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, London. #innomedellastoria
