👉In powerlifting, it’s all about what you do on the platform that matters, not the gym. That’s why it’s so important to peak at the right time. Here are simple guidelines to peak so you’re strongest when it matters most. Great artwork from @deltoidium - 🌵There’s a ton of different ways to design a program. For this example, I’m going to use a 12-week program split up into three, three week blocks. Each block would be followed by a planned deload week, or a lighter/reduced workload week. - 🐂Block 1 (weeks 1-3) will be higher in volume, lower intensity. Basically more sets/reps with lighter weight -- think of this block as building your base. You will be focused on dialing in your speed & technique, & increasing muscle hypertrophy. Training will be less specific & you will perform more general assistance movements during this block. General guideline: main work, 55-75% range. - 🍒Block 2 (weeks 5-7) will be moderate volume & intensity. You will be handling heavier weight, but your overall volume will go down. Your work is more specific in this block, meaning more competition lifts & their variations to build the competition lifts. Your general assistance work will be reduced. General guideline: main work, 75-89% range. - 🐸Block 3 (weeks 9-11 will be low volume, high intensity. Training is more specific -- you’ll be handling heavy weights for the competition lifts, typically in the 90+% range & tapering your assistance work. I typically recommend taking your last heavy deadlift 14-21 days out, last heavy squat 10-14 days out, & your last heavy bench 7-14 days out. - 🐣I recommend these guidelines as a starting off point. When you gain more experience, you can customize it to what works best for you. Some lifters will need more recovery time than others (ex. smaller lifters, novices, & weaker lifters generally don’t need as long of a taper). -
