Hanging shoulder shrugs give the shoulder joints experience in their active and more passive range. After recently reading an article written by a Physio who works with rock climbers it was suggested that resting in passive ranges was not optimal for the shoulder joint as it could cause impingement & strain in the joint capsule but my question is when you are hanging you aren't completely passive? You'd fall off the cliff  no?! 🤔The author then went on to explain that in the 'passive' phase the climber in question also had poor shoulder  alignment. The take away for me was the alignment & understanding where your body works optimally. Movement is movement & in my opinion you should be practising a variety of loads & shapes. If you are experiencing any shoulder impingement/pain in hanging try reducing your load or gently externally rotating your humeri & dropping your ribs to help spread the scapulae & to connect your lower and upper body - being 'passive' does not mean completely disengaged. If it hurts do not push through with intensity, your body is communicating with you & you may need more time to adapt or possibly need to adjust your form. ✨Genni✨  Genni, a recent psychology graduate, is our admin bookworm.  When we need a problem researched, she’s on it, and comes back with multiple solutions.  Although she doesn’t brag, she’s also the proud cat mother to five cats and a dog named Digby.  Even more impressive, she never comes to Idlehour with cat or dog hair on her.  Genni is caring to everyone who comes through our door, helping them with problems in and outside the studio, and sometimes proudly using her degree to give them advice.  One of my favorite things about Genni is how caring she is with kids.  In her spare time, she volunteers for @erinshouse4grievingchildren, an organization dedicated to helping kids through grief.  She truly listens to children, and is able to communicate to them in a way that they can easily relate to.  We will miss her when she goes to grad school, but look forward to see what her and her six fur babies will do in the future. -Tresa #dtfw #pilates
Was under the weather and traveling last week, but have to finish out the rest of the crew! •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• ✨Katie✨  Katie is one of our apprentices who is quickly approaching her final certification.  I love teaching when she’s there because she brings cheeriness with her that every studio needs at 8 AM in the morning.  She is dedicated to everything Pilates:  her self practice, her clients, and to absorbing herself in method.  I have so many favorite things  about Katie, but what I appreciate most of all about her is her professionalism.  She is always timely when getting back about clients, meetings, and any questions I might have.  Her clients favorite thing about her?  How dedicated she is to making them feel better and how inspiring she is to make them want to be better students.  On a side note, she has incredible organization skills. Funky twisting on disconnected canes, FUN!! Take it slower than slow, twist further around than you think. Try the landing pose on the ground before dropping into it, its not your average arm balance. You can even rest the side of your head near your ear on the ground as you find the balance. Lower back pain?  Check your shoulder flexion.  Far too often health professionals blame a weak core for the cause of lower back pain.  There are so many different reasons for this condition,  it's almost impossible to pick that "one reason", unless you're smarter than your nervous system of course.  Check your overall function.
