Canyon Diablo. The Canyon Diablo meteorites represent the fragments of meteoritic material that generated arguably one of the worlds most famous geological sites: Meteor Crater in Arizona, USA. This meteorite is an iron meteorite that fell around 50,000 years ago and are known to have been utilised by pre-historic Native Americans. In 1953 geochemical analysis of lead isotopes within the meteorite allowed for refinement of the age of the Earth to 4.55 billion years (± 70 million). The margin of error, or spread in ages is interpreted as the duration of the formation of the Solar nebula and its resultant collapse into the solar disk that formed our Sun and the planets. #geology #geologyrocks #rocks #rockstar #space #naturalworld #nature #meteorite #spacerock #solarsystem #extraterrestrial #minerals #metal #nickel #iron #silver #meteorcrater #arizona #america #usa #texture #naturalcolor #macro #cosmos #rockaroundtheclock #rockandahardplace #getyourrocksoff #drrhcmadden #maddenthings
When you find yourself between a rock and a hard place.
I know that contemporaries are not a cup of tea for everyone as most of them are problematic, boring and predictable. I quite agree with that opinion as I end up, most of the times, fed up with the same story over and over again written by different authors. And , as much as I have enjoyed contemporaries so much in the past, nowadays I hardly pick one up and I really miss having a cute story to read and fall in love with. What do you guys think about the topic surrounding contemporaries? And, if you have some good recommendations, please, leave a comment so I can finally read one 🙌 • • • Se que los libros contemporáneos no son los preferidos de muchos ya que se ven con personajes problemáticos, aburridos y predecibles.

Brenham. The Brenham Meteorite is a pallasite meteorite that fell in Kansas, USA. Pallasites are a class of stony-iron meteorites that contain roughly equal abundances of metal and silicates. The original find of a 450 kg mass of the Brenham was discovered in 1949, with total recovery to date measuring over 4.3 tonnes. The unusual looking rock is composed of large olivine crystals of gemstone quality (peridot) set within a iron-nickel matrix which sometimes shows Widmanstätten Pattern. The importance of pallasites is not to be understated. With only 61 known pallasites each one is vital to our understanding of the early Solar System and planetary formation. Once believed to represent the core-mantle boundary of fragmented but differentiated-asteroids a recent hypotheses suggested that they are impact-generated core-mantle mixtures. #geology #geologyrocks #rocks #rockstar #space #naturalworld #meteorite #spacerock #solarsystem #extraterrestrial #minerals #peridot #metal #nickel #iron #silver #green #yellow #brenham #america #usa #naturalcolor #macro #cosmos #rockaroundtheclock #rockandahardplace #getyourrocksoff #drrhcmadden #maddenthings

The oldest material in the Solar System. Northwest Africa 749 (NWA749) is a stony-meteorite (silicate mineral dominated) and more specifically a carbonaceous chondrite. Despite being the commonest type of meteorite they are difficult to recover after impact as they weather easily. Despite their rarity they are incredibly important to science as the chondrules (spherical bodies contained within) represent some of the most pristine matter known to science. The chemical composition of the chondrules resembles the chemistry of the Sun. Carbonaceous chondrites are primitive, undifferentiated meteorites that formed in oxygen-rich regions of the earliest solar system. As such, the metal contained within is not found in its native form but rather as silicates, oxides or sulphides. The chondrules themselves formed from molten or partially molten droplets in space before being accreted into an asteroid body. Because they are likely the oldest solid material in the Solar System they are reasonably beleived to be the building blocks of planetary systems. The Earth itself is ~4.54 ± 0.05 billion years old. However, chondrules represent the oldest known solid constituents formed in the Solar System with some yielding ages between 4.567 and 4.68 billion years old. It is currently accepted that the Earth begun to accrete shortly after the condensation of these chondrules. #geology #geologyrocks #rocks #rockstar #space #naturalworld #nature #meteorite #spacerock #solarsystem #extraterrestrial #old #ancient #minerals #brown #sphere #nwa #africa #texture #naturalcolor #naturaltexture #macro #cosmos #rockaroundtheclock #getyourrocksoff #rockandahardplace #drrhcmadden #maddenthings

Nantan, NAN35 The Nantan meteorite is an iron meteorite that fell near the city of Nantan in Guangxi Province, China with the fall potentially seen in the year 1516. With an impact field of around 8 x 28 kilometres this 0.485 gram meteorite fragment represents a larger meteorite that exploded on entry into Earth's atmosphere. To date ~9.5 tonnes of this meteorite have been recovered with the largest fragment weighing in at two tonnes. The first recovery of the meteorite did not occur until the 1950's when China was experiencing rapid industrial growth. At the time the iron-meteorite was collected for smelting and metal production. Although it was found that the nickel content (~7%) was too high for smelting applications. #geology #geologyrocks #rocks #rockstar #space #naturalworld #nature #meteorite #spacerock #solarsystem #extraterrestrial #minerals #iron #nickel #metal #silver #guangxi #china #texture #naturalcolor #naturaltexture #macro #cosmos #rockaroundtheclock #getyourrocksoff #rockandahardplace #drrhcmadden #maddenthings
Is this what people mean when they say they’re stuck between a rock and a hard place? #looksprettygoodtome 🌞❤️ . 📷 @thebraidedlena
Campo Del Cielo 140 At just 0.582 grams this tiny iron-meteorite is one of a group of iron-meteorites recovered from the area of Campo Del Cielo around 1000 km northwest of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Although the crater field associated with this meteorite fall is well constrained to an area ~3 x 19 km, the wider distribution of meteoritic fragments extends an additional 60 km. At least two of the 26 craters in this area contain thousands of iron-meteorite fragments like this one. Such a wide distribution is suggestive of a larger body entering the Earth's atmosphere that fragmented extensively prior to impacting. These fragments contain an unusually high density of inclusions (for an Iron meteorite) and this may have caused the ease of fragmentation. #geology #geologyrocks #rocks #rockstar #space #naturalworld #nature #meteorite #spacerock #solarsystem #extraterrestrial #minerals #iron #nickel #metal #silver #buenosaires #argentina #texture #naturalcolor #naturaltexture #macro #cosmos #rockaroundtheclock #rockandahardplace #getyourrocksoff #drrhcmadden #maddenthings

Campo Del Cielo 119 At just 1.169 grams this tiny iron-meteorite is one of a group of iron-meteorites recovered from the area of Campo Del Cielo around 1000 km northwest of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The meteorites that impacted here 4000-5000 years ago created a crater field containing at least twenty-six individual craters and covers an area ~3 x 19 km in size. To date the crater field has yielded 100 tonnes of meteoritic material, making this amongst the heaviest meteorites ever recovered on Earth. #geology #geologyrocks #rocks #rockstar #space #naturalworld #nature #meteorite #spacerock #solarsystem #extraterrestrial #minerals #iron #nickel #metal #silver #buenosaires #argentina #texture #naturalcolor #naturaltexture #macro #cosmos #rockaroundtheclock #getyourrocksoff #rockandahardplace #drrhcmadden #maddenthings

Cosmic minerals, cosmic patterns. Many specimens are recovered within the 'iron group' of meteorites, but the beautiful Widmanstätten Pattern is not always seen. We cannot reproduce this texture synthetically due to cooling rates of 100-10,000 °C per million years. The only way this incredible texture can be seen is through careful cutting, polishing and acid etching of octahedrite iron-meteorites. Because taenite is more resilient to acid etching the kamacite 'pops out' against it. This is seen here where the bright white lamellae are kamacite and the thin dull lamellae are taenite. Dark mottled areas are the amalgamation of these two minerals forming plessite. That this pattern can only be produced through exceptionally slow cooling over several million years is considered proof of an extraterrestrial origin and can be used to determine if a sample is indeed meteoritic.
