Do you think of sugar when someone mentions the word addiction? 🤔 . Probably not right? We usually think of alcohol & drug addiction. But research in recent years have found that sugar lights up the reward system in our brain which in turn releases dopamine, which is a feel good hormone, just as it does when drugs are used.  Activating this reward system by consuming sugar once in a while more than likely won’t cause too much of an imbalance. The problem arises when people consume too much sugar as most Americans do, and our reward system is constantly being activated which causes lots of problems like insulin resistance leading to diabetes, cognitive impairment, anxiety, depression, and obesity. . It’s no wonder that when you have a sugary food you usually end up craving more and more of it, and some people truly feel have no control of it. The daily recommended allowance for added sugars is about 6 teaspoons for women and 9 teaspoons for men per day. . How to reduce sugar intake: Eat more home cooked meals  Avoid or limit packaged/processed foods Eat veggies and fruits as snacks Replace water for juice or sports drinks Read food labels for other names of sugar  Don’t substitute real sugar for artificial sugar like Splenda, which is just as bad if not worse
