The great thing about the December Grinds is the college Grinders come home on break and put in work. While I’m always glad that they’re making themselves work, it’s also great to see them. Balancing Your Program: Live in the Moment  One of my biggest takeaways from my weekend with @strengthsensei and other great strength coaches from around the world is that if you fail to plan, you plan to fail- BUT- you must also live in the moment. Meaning: your plan sometimes can reveal something you didn't expect and sometimes things need to be altered. Or perhaps you find yourself rapidly ahead from a progress standpoint and it's a waste to just keep up the plan when you could go in a more efficient direction.  In an age where information is in abundance, you need to know how to use it. It's also why any cookie cutter approaches don't work. Good coaching is important for this reason. Pictured here is Erv Domanski and I coaching Heiki Nabi, Greco-Roman silver medalist in the 2016 Olympic Games, through one tough workout. Erv is one of those assertive coaches who makes sure everything is done right the moment he steps in the room. I could tell within 5 minutes of meeting him and it was a great pleasure to work with him last weekend. Some more plyos for you guys. Not every gym is build to do typical hurdle hops or sprints or has the equipment to do so. Be creative, grab some rollers.  This set I emphasized 2 things: 1)quick turnover between jumps. Absorb and explode 2) body control. Land in the right spot and be in a position to jump again.  A common problem I see when people jump is that they're focused so much on the legs the their arms aren't in position and have to be reset before transitioning. This takes time. Your whole body works as 1 unit. Resisted Drive Phase/Acceleration phase training with an explosive acceleration for 2-3 seconds. The athletes do 3 reps of jogs for proper force application to 3 reps of accelerations x 3 sets. One of the best things about training athletes is when the texts come in from them telling me how they’ve been rewarded for their extra work, and/or they’ve reached one of their goals. @wells.hallman came to me in late January of 2017 telling me he wanted to put in work to help his teammates at Batesburg-Leesville keep playing at a high level, be more of a factor during games by being a bigger contributor on offense, defense, and special teams, be on the All Region team, play college ball, and drop significant time off his 40. 10 months later he’s met all of his goals and he has been named Co Special Teams MVP for Region V-AA in 2017. There are roughly 15 events in the season that  culminate in later July with the Molokai to Oahu, spanning 32 miles across the Kaiwi channel, between the two major islands.
