The Fish and Wildlife Department agents confiscate illegal wildlife goods at US ports of entry. Many are sent here to the National Wildlife Property Repository. The goal of this warehouse is to look at ways get these wildlife ‘products’ into the community for education and teaching tools to help stop illegal wildlife trafficking. #endangeredspecies#wildlifetrafficking#wildlifeconservation
Council members in the Yukon have recently proposed a shorter wolverine trapping season. The Yukon has an estimated 6000-7000 wolverines within its wilderness. Although zero trapping would be ideal, having trappers that encourage responsible management and science is the next best thing. It’s always a good day when policy and science intertwine. Introducing you to Dr. Joel Berger, Senior Conservationist at the Wildlife Conservation Society, fighter for and advocate of endangered species and wild lands, and who I want to be when I grow up . Joel has spent the better part of the last twenty years fighting for little known species of animals affected by climate change in some of the most remote and inhospitable parts of the world. He backpacks for 5 days over 3 17,000 passes in the Himalayas to study Takin, a little known goat species. In Patagonia he’s currently studying how climate change and the receding ice caps are impacting Huemul, the most endangered deer species in North & South America with only 3,000 individuals left in the wild. And it takes 17 DAYS of travel to get to the Russian Arctic where he endures brutally cold temperatures to study how musk ox and adapting to rising temperatures . But as impressive as Joel’s work is, it fails in comparison to why he does it. He spent the first part of his career studying the more popular species in North America such as moose, elk, and mountain goats. But he realized that these animals already have plenty of people working on their conservation. He decided he would dedicate his life to the animals who don’t have a voice. The animals whose future is truly in danger and needs the most help. The ones no one knows about. . In today’s world, and especially in the hunting community, it’s so hard to find people who selflessly care for the future and well being of animals. Joel doesn’t ask for credit, and doesn’t care if he receives it, it’s his life’s purpose to give animals a future. That’s what conservation is all about. And why I want to be Joel Berger when I grow up . #conservation#wildlife#wildlifeconservation#wildlifeconservationsociety
As the sun set on September 28, 1963, the last known female jaguar in the United States was killed near Big Lake in the White Mountains of Arizona. Ecological artist Lauren Strohacker and astronomer Dr. Kevin Healy used Digitstar software to recreate this sky using the date and coordinates of the kill. Strohacker recorded the sounds of a predator caller (which mimics injured rabbits or fawns) from 80 yards away, the hunter’s estimated distance from the jaguar. The Mesa Community College Planetarium Skydome was transformed into a memorial, both for the jaguar's death and for the systematic extirpation of the species from its North American habitat. • “Life / Death” single-channel video, Mesa Community College Gallery and Planetarium. Look at these snowy faces. Detail from “Family of Muskoxen” by Vincent Munier. Part of the beautiful current exhibit at @paulnicklengallery, which was founded to highlight the work of #conservation artists. A portion of proceeds support @sea_legacy. Went yesterday and there is such stunning photography to see - check it out if you are in nyc this holiday season. And if you are lucky you just might meet @paulnicklen & @cristinamittermeier too! #turningthetide on #climatechange
DOLCE & GAPANDA 🐼 The February pinup in my #bêteàporter calendar 💗 wearing an AMAZING cannoli dress by @dolcegabbana 👗 Calendars available in my shop (link in bio). Each month features an animal species at risk of endangerment or exploitation wearing a look from the #ss18 runway shows.
