"...Here rest your wing when they are weary; Here lodge as in a sanctuary! Come often to us, fear no wrong; Sit near us on the bough! We'll talk of sunshine and of song, And summer days, when we were young; Sweet childish days, that were as long As twenty days are now." - from To a Butterfly (second poem), William Wordsworth . . . Our flower beds became a thriving habitat for pollinators last season. Butterflies, bumble bees and hummingbirds eagerly flew from flower to flower in our tangle of booms, a tiny pollinator sanctuary in our small, but crowded-during-the-summertime city. Monarch butterflies often joined each other on a single flower head, their colorful wing patterns blending and contrasting with bright zinnias, creating so much vibrance and beauty. Bees frequently took long naps in the giant zinnia blossoms. Watching the monarchs visit our flowers each day for nectar inspired me to find a spot to plant some milkweed this spring for monarch caterpillars. The milkweed plant provides everything monarch caterpillars need to grow into beautiful butterflies and is their only food, so it is essential to the monarch species. Monarch butterfly counts have dropped in the last few decades. Farmers, gardeners and flower lovers creating even small healthy pollinator habitats full of plants monarchs need, grown without pesticides, can assist the monarch recovery, which in turn enables this beautiful and beneficial insect to contribute to the health of many ecosystems.

Happy Mail! 😍💃🏼 My @bakercreekseeds order finally came in, and I’m over the moon! Some of these seeds are veggies that I’ve been swooning over forever! The Glass Gem corn, Chinese 5 Color peppers, Pusa Asita carrots, Patty Pan squash, and Ancient watermelon all have been dreams of mine to grow! 😍🌱 The Henderson’s Pink Ponderosa 🍅 is going to be grown solely to can! My sweet Granny is 81, and has promised that she will show me her ways when the tomatoes are ready!😁 Of course you all know the Tigger melon story 🙄, and I chose Emily basil 🌱 because duh, my name is Emily. The Scarlet Globe Radish is only going to be grown as a companion to the tomatoes. Every thing else is going to be grown just for the heck of it! Let’s just hope that I can make enough room for these guys, the #superduperseedswap2018 seeds, and the #growingseedswapjr seeds! 😃🤞🏻 Btw, thanks Baker Creek for the extra seeds! You guys rock! ❤️
